Windows 10 · what to do next

Still on Windows 10? Here is what to do, in plain English.

Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 10 in October 2025. That does not mean the computer stops working today — it means the choices are worth making on purpose, not by accident.

What ended, and when

Microsoft's own dates

Microsoft's Extended Security Updates page, checked 2026-09-26, states: “Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025.” Free security updates stopped on that date. The same page states you can still buy your way into Extended Security Updates: “You can enroll in ESU any time until the program ends on October 12, 2027.” Read Microsoft's own page here: microsoft.com/en-us/windows/extended-security-updates.

Step one

Can your computer run Windows 11?

Microsoft publishes the system requirements and a free PC Health Check tool built for exactly this question: microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11-specifications. We can also just look at the machine when we're there and tell you plainly, no tool required.

Your options

Three choices: extended updates, upgrade, or replace

🛡️
Extended updates (ESU)

If the computer can't move to Windows 11 yet, or you need more time, Microsoft's ESU program keeps security fixes coming through October 12, 2027.

⬆️
Upgrade to Windows 11

If the hardware qualifies, this is usually the simplest fix — same computer, current support.

🖥️
Replace it

If the machine is old enough that an upgrade isn't worth it, a new computer with everything moved over is often the better use of the money.

What it costs

What an upgrade visit looks like

We move your files, logins, and settings, get everything working the way you're used to, and walk you through what changed. Billed at the standard $95 an hour, first hour minimum. Most visits — upgrade or full replacement — run one to two hours.

“He is patient with people having little knowledge of PC like us. He helped us setting up our new PC with Window 11, transferred all the data and pictures from old computer to the new.”

Worth asking first

When a new computer is the better buy

Most older computers we see are not worn out. The usual causes of a slow machine are too little memory, a drive that is nearly full, or programs that start themselves in the background without being asked. We look first and tell you plainly whether an upgrade is worth the money, at $95 an hour on site. If the hardware can't meet Windows 11's requirements at all, or a new machine is simply the better answer, we will say so.

Common questions

Questions people ask.

Is Windows 10 still safe to use?

Microsoft's own extended-security-updates page (checked 2026-09-26) states that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. After that date Microsoft no longer ships free security fixes for it, so a Windows 10 computer connected to the internet is more exposed than it was before.

Can I pay to keep getting updates?

Yes. Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program covers eligible Windows 10, version 22H2 devices. Microsoft's page (checked 2026-09-26) states you can enroll in ESU any time until the program ends on October 12, 2027.

When is a new computer the better buy?

We look first and tell you plainly whether an upgrade is worth the money. If a computer cannot meet Windows 11's requirements at all, or the hardware is old enough that a new one makes more sense, we say so.

Will I lose my files and photos?

No. Moving your files, logins and settings to the upgraded or new computer is part of the visit, not an extra step you have to do yourself.
