First, which is it?

A virus, or a scam happening right now?

If someone had control of your screen, the mouse moved on its own, or you called a number from a pop-up, treat it as a scam first: turn the computer off and call your bank from the number on your card. The steps are on the page about what to do right now. Everything below is for the slower kind of trouble.

Not every pop-up is a virus, either. Some are website notifications that someone once clicked “Allow” on. Those are switched off in the browser’s settings, with nothing to remove.

Signs people describe

What it usually looks like.

⚠️
Pop-ups and warnings

Windows that will not close, or a warning with a phone number on it. Never call that number: it is answered by the people who put it there.

🧭
A browser that goes its own way

Pages open that you did not choose, a new search page appears that you never set, or the toolbar has buttons you do not remember adding.

🐢
A computer that suddenly crawls

It was fine last month, and now it is slow, the fan runs hard while it sits idle, or programs you never installed start on their own.

How I handle it

Your accounts first, then the computer.

Accounts first. If email or banking was open on the computer, we secure those logins before anything else. A computer can always be fixed. A drained account can be gone for good.

Find what is running. I look at what starts with the computer and what has been installed, including remote-control programs. Those are often real, signed software that businesses use every day, which is why antivirus does not always flag them.

Clean it, or start fresh. I remove adware and unwanted browser add-ons and put the browser’s settings back. If I find a program that let someone else control the computer, the safer answer is to copy your files off, check them, and reinstall the system fresh, because a cleaned computer cannot be fully trusted afterwards. That is scoped and quoted with you before any of that work begins.

Your files stay yours. Before anything is erased, your files are copied off and checked. If you are worried about them, the data recovery page explains how that copy is made.

Macs too. Macs get unwanted software as well, such as adware and fake “cleaner” apps. They come off the same careful way.

Common questions

Questions people ask first.

A pop-up says my computer is infected and gives a number to call. Should I call?

No. A pop-up with a phone number on it is part of a scam, not a fix for one. Close the browser, and if it will not close, turn the computer off. Then call someone you already trust.

How much does virus removal cost?

$95 an hour, first hour minimum. If the computer needs a full reinstall, that is scoped and quoted with you before any of that work begins.

What happens to my files?

If a reinstall is needed, your files are copied off and checked first, and only then is the computer erased.

Why didn't my antivirus catch it?

The remote-control programs used in these scams are often real, signed software that businesses use every day, so antivirus does not always flag them. That is why I look at what is installed and running, not only at what the antivirus reports.

Do you work on Macs?

Yes. Mac and Windows, desktops and laptops.
